Plant information

Plant Description

Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ is an elegant perennial salvia, celebrated for its delicate pink-lilac blooms and aromatic green foliage. Flowering from early summer through to autumn, this variety brings long-lasting colour, grace, and structure to borders, patio containers, and mixed perennial planting schemes.

The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Its upright, compact habit provides a tidy, architectural form, adding visual interest and movement without overpowering surrounding plants.

Thriving in full sun with well-drained soil, Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ is hardy once established and drought-tolerant, making it a low-maintenance option for both beginner and experienced gardeners. Regular deadheading encourages a second wave of flowers, extending the flowering season and keeping borders and containers looking fresh.

Perfect for the front or middle of a border, or as a charming focal point in pots, Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ combines elegance, pollinator appeal, and dependable garden performance. Buy Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ in the UK from Middleton Nurseries and enjoy a resilient, easy-to-grow perennial that enhances your garden with colour and wildlife-friendly blooms throughout the season. Notably, Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ made its debut at the virtual Chelsea Flower Show in 2020.

🌿 How to Care for Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’

Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ should be left through the winter, as the dead wood protects them from frost. They can be pruned in early spring, and more vigorous varieties may be trimmed again around June.
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ can be susceptible to aphids, capsid bugs, whitefly, sage leafhoppers, and glasshouse red spider mites. Additionally, fungal issues like grey mould (Botrytis) can develop in cool and damp conditions, especially during overwintering.
Water Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ regularly during dry spells, particularly newly planted ones. Established hardy salvias are drought-tolerant but benefit from deep watering during prolonged hot periods. Avoid waterlogging, as it can cause root rot.
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ require light feeding in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or compost. Tender salvias benefit from fertilisation every 2–4 weeks during the growing season using a liquid feed for flowering plants. Over-fertilising should be avoided, as it can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
Propagation of Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’is prohibited without a licence
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ should be trimmed around April or May, a technique often called the “Chelsea Chop,” once new shoots start to appear. Cut back to the fresh growth, and continue deadheading throughout the season. Vigorous varieties can be pruned again in July to encourage bushier, greener plants rather than tall, woody stems. Salvias should not be cut back in autumn, as leaving the foliage intact helps protect the plant from frost.
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ moderately drought-tolerant once established, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun. Tender salvias are less drought-tolerant and require more consistent watering.
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ performs well in UK gardens if given full sun and free-draining soil. It’s hardy in most areas, flowers for months in summer and autumn, and suits borders or containers. Avoid winter wet and prune lightly in spring.
