Growing Salvia greggii UK
☀ Position & Soil
Full sun and free-draining soil — the same requirements as microphylla and jamensis. Semi-hardy (RHS H3–H4); survives mild UK winters in sheltered south-facing gardens with a generous October mulch. In colder gardens, take cuttings in August. See the RHS salvia guide.
✂ Pruning
Cut back in spring once new growth visible at base — never in autumn. Deadhead every two to three weeks through the season. Hampton Hack trim in early July for a strong late-summer flush. See our pruning guide.
💧 Feeding
Feed fortnightly with high-potash liquid fertiliser from May to September. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which produce leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Drought-tolerant once established — water regularly in the first season only.
❄ Overwintering
Semi-hardy (RHS H3–H4). Mulch generously in October in sheltered gardens or take semi-ripe cuttings in August in colder areas. See our overwintering guide and cuttings guide.
