The Salvia Wish collection is a series of compact, floriferous microphylla varieties bred for strong performance in both borders and containers — plants that combine reliable long flowering with a naturally tidy habit that doesn’t require constant deadheading to look good. The collection brings together some of the most garden-ready salvias we grow at Middleton Nurseries.
All Wish collection varieties share the same microphylla growing requirements: full sun, free-draining soil, high-potash feeding through the season, spring cut-back and summer deadheading. Semi-hardy (RHS H3–H4) — they will overwinter in sheltered south-facing gardens with a generous October mulch, or from August cuttings in colder areas.
Salvia ‘Love and Wishes’ — Rich red-purple flowers with deep burgundy stems — one of the most dramatic combinations in the collection. A naturally upright habit reaching around 80cm. Flowers from June to November in most UK gardens. Particularly effective alongside Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ for a cohesive deep purple scheme.
Salvia ‘Make a Wish’ — Soft lilac-pink flowers on a compact, bushy plant. A restrained, elegant colour that works in a wide range of planting schemes — from contemporary to cottage garden. Around 50–60cm with a neat, self-supporting habit.
Salvia ‘Heart and Soul’ — Warm deep pink flowers, slightly more saturated than ‘Make a Wish’. A prolific flowerer with a naturally branching habit that fills out well through the season. Around 60cm.
Full sun, free-draining soil, fortnightly high-potash feeding from May to September. Cut back in spring once new growth is visible at the base — not in autumn. Deadhead regularly through the season. These compact varieties are particularly well suited to container growing — use a peat-free compost with 20% grit and move under cover before the first frost.

Key varieties include Love and Wishes, Make a Wish and Heart and Soul — all sharing the same long flowering season from May to first frosts and the same semi-hardy status.
Semi-hardy (RHS H3–H4). They will overwinter in sheltered south-facing gardens with a generous October mulch. In colder gardens, take semi-ripe cuttings in August and overwinter in a frost-free space.
From May right through to the first frosts with regular deadheading — the characteristic long season of the microphylla and jamensis group. ‘Love and Wishes’ in particular continues flowering well into October and November in mild autumns.
