TL;DR — Quick Summary
- Salvia discolor UK produces near-black flowers set inside silver-white woolly calyces — the most dramatic colour contrast in the entire salvia world
- A specialist plant from the Andes of Peru — more demanding than standard salvias but producing an effect nothing else can replicate
- Tender — move under cover before first frost or take cuttings in August; the cuttings method is more reliable for winter survival
- Flowers late summer to autumn, often August to November — the silver calyces are attractive from mid-summer before flowers open
- Genuinely unlike anything else in the garden; gardeners who grow Salvia discolor UK successfully rarely stop

Salvia discolor UK is unlike any other salvia in cultivation. Where most salvias produce flowers that are simply a colour — pink, red, blue, purple — discolor produces near-black flowers set inside silver-white calyces that are almost as conspicuous as the flowers themselves. The contrast between these two elements is extraordinary: the dark, almost indigo-black of the petals against the luminous silver of the surrounding calyx creates an effect that gardeners who see it for the first time rarely forget.
The Flower
Deep indigo-black — one of the darkest natural flower colours available in any garden plant. The colour has a deep, inky quality that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. In full sun it has a subtle sheen; in shade it disappears into near-darkness.
The Calyx
Silver-white and downy — almost woolly in texture. The calyces persist even when the flowers are not open, giving the plant a silver-felted appearance throughout the season. The contrast with the dark flowers is the defining characteristic of the species.
Growing Salvia discolor UK
Salvia discolor UK originates from the Andes of Peru — high-altitude scrub habitats where it grows in full sun with excellent drainage. This background makes it more cold-tolerant than its tender status might suggest, but it is still not reliably hardy in UK outdoor conditions and needs overwintering under cover.
☀ Position & Soil
Full sun and extremely free-draining soil. Salvia discolor UK is more sensitive to wet winter soil than most salvias — the fleshy stems and woolly texture make it particularly vulnerable to rot in damp conditions. Sharp grit in the compost and excellent drainage are essential. The RHS tender salvia guide recommends a very sheltered position.
❄ Overwintering
Tender — move under cover before first frost. Take semi-ripe cuttings in August as insurance — the cuttings overwinter more reliably than large established plants, which can rot in low-light winter conditions even in a greenhouse. Keep barely moist through winter. See our cuttings guide.
📅 Flowering Season
Late summer to autumn — Salvia discolor UK is a late starter, often not flowering until August or September. The silver calyces are visible and attractive from mid-summer onwards before the flowers open. Flowering continues until first frost.
⬆ Height & Habit
Reaches 90–120cm in a good season with an upright, slightly sprawling habit. The silver-felted stems are part of the ornamental effect. May need a single stake in exposed positions. The plant looks at its most dramatic in late afternoon light when the dark flowers and silver calyces are most visible.
Collector’s note: Salvia discolor UK is a genuine specialist’s plant — more demanding in cultivation than the standard microphylla and jamensis varieties, but producing an effect that nothing else can replicate. Gardeners who grow it successfully rarely stop.
