Fully hardy perennials (RHS H6). Dense upright flower spikes in blues, purples and pinks. Die back in winter, regrow reliably each spring. The backbone of the UK perennial border.

Shrubby and long-flowering from June to first frost. Small-leaved with masses of flowers in reds, pinks and bi-colours. Borderline hardy — protect in colder regions.

For permanent plants that return each year without any fuss, go for nemorosa or sylvestris. For longer flowering and more exotic colours, microphylla and greggii are worth the small extra effort of winter protection in colder gardens.
Most salvias prefer full sun and will flower most freely in an open, sunny position. Nemorosa tolerates some light shade, but flowering will be reduced. Avoid deep shade entirely.
Free-draining soil is essential. Most salvias will struggle in waterlogged conditions but tolerate poor, dry soils remarkably well once established. If your soil is heavy clay, improve drainage before planting.
Compact nemorosa varieties like the Sensation series (20–30cm) suit the front of borders and pots. Taller varieties like Caradonna (60–80cm) and guaranitica (120cm+) need more space and work best mid-to-back of border.

When is the best time to buy salvias online?
Spring (April–June) is ideal — plants establish quickly in warm soil and will flower in their first season. We also sell in late summer for a second planting window. We dispatch when plants are in prime condition, not before.
Do salvias come back every year?
Hardy salvias (nemorosa, sylvestris) are fully perennial and will return reliably each spring. Shrubby salvias (microphylla, greggii, jamensis) are perennial but borderline hardy in colder parts of the UK — a layer of mulch in autumn gives good protection in most gardens.
How long do salvias flower?
Hardy nemorosa varieties typically flower May–July, then again September–October after the Hampton Chop. Shrubby salvias flower from June right through to the first frost — often 5–6 months of colour in a single season.
Can I grow salvias in pots?
Yes — compact varieties like the Sensation series and most microphylla and greggii are excellent in pots. Use free-draining compost, water regularly through summer, and bring tender varieties under cover for winter.
